SUV vs. Sedan: Making the Right Choice

444

We list the points to help you make the right choice between an SUV and a sedan.

Economics

Sedans are cheaper than equivalent SUVs. But SUVs can offer a good mix of cost and functionality without being as expensive as trucks. Some SUVs are also priced closer to sedans while offering much more space, power, and functions.

Space

SUVs are larger than sedans and offer a significant increase in passenger and cargo space. Compare equivalent SUVs and sedans, and you’ll realize how much more practical SUVs are. And thanks to increased ground clearance and refined suspension setups, they’re more comfortable and can go anywhere.

Reliability

Reliability depends on make and model for both SUVs and sedans. But SUVs cost more to build and usually contain parts that are more robust and reliable. SUV engines are also bigger and more powerful, and their suspensions are designed for heavy loads and punishment. So SUV owners can rightly have much more confidence in their vehicles while expecting them to last longer.

Fuel Efficiency

There’s no contest here. Sedans are lighter, usually have smaller turbocharged engines, and therefore are way more fuel-efficient than SUVs. But that does not mean that SUVs are gas guzzlers. The crossover and smaller SUVs are getting more and more efficient with every upgrade.

Drivetrain

SUVs offer luxury, comfort while being capable of going everywhere. They even have the option of all-wheel drive. Their engines and gearboxes are also suited to these tasks. Sedans are designed to be driven exclusively on the road. They can be sporty, luxurious, and spacious but can’t carry more than five at a time.

Function

SUVs can be used for a variety of tasks. They can ferry up to eight people at a time, along with a lot of cargo. They can tow extremely heavy loads. They can be safely driven on and off the road too. They’re great for large families. Sedans are excellent executive and small family cars. They can seat five, and carry whatever fits in the trunk. Some also have limited towing capabilities along with four-wheel drive, but they can’t be taken off-road. Luxurious sedans are great for business and transporting clients.

Consider how you’ll use your vehicle to make your decision easier.
